The Importance of Grooming

Here at Salish Veterinary Hospital, we believe that grooming is an essential aspect of pet care that goes beyond just making your pet look good. Regular grooming plays a key role in maintaining the overall health of your four-legged friend. By maintaining a routine grooming schedule, you help remove dirt, debris, and dead hair, which can otherwise lead to matting, skin irritation, or infections. Grooming also provides an opportunity to check for early signs of health issues, depending on coat type. Salish offers the following grooming services:

  • Baths (regular or medicated)
  • Nail trims
  • Anal gland expressions
  • Sanitary trims
  • Brush outs
  • Mat clipping
  • Lion shaves (for cats only)
  • Ear cleaning
  • Shave downs*

*We offer body shaves for dogs that have fear or aggression issues and require full sedation for grooming.

Regular grooming is significantly more important for longer, thicker coat types. This specific type of coat, if not kept up on grooming, can easily mat, tangle, or get impacted. If these issues arise, they may impair your pet's ability to regulate body temperature effectively and potentially lead to skin irritation or infections.

While we are not groomers, we do believe grooming is a vital part of pet care that promotes physical health and emotional well-being. Keeping your pet clean and well-groomed ensures they remain comfortable, happy, and healthy throughout their life.
